Isn’t it always great to save money?

We all know that being a student can be quite expensive and most of us are always on the hunt of finding new ways to cut down on some extra costs. During my university experience I have figured out several things that have really helped my bank account and I feel like passing the wisdom I developed on the subject to you.

To begin with one of the biggest expenses, let’s talk about accommodation. It is kind of obvious but living with roommates and especially with friends can really help minimise costs such as utilities, rent and also groceries, since it is much cheaper cooking together and also saves a lot of valuable time. If the communication with your flatmates is great you can also make an arrangement of who is going to cook lunch or dinner, for time management purposes. Plus, it is always fun being around your friends and who knows, probably organising amazing parties every now and then.

That brings me to my next tip, which is: always cook and prevent yourself from ordering take away, even though in the moment it is very tempting. It really makes a difference in the bank since ordering food can be very expensive whereas cooking is one third or less from the price of the ingredients. Comparing the prices from your local supermarkets just one time in the beginning of the year, for things that you are likely to purchase, will literally save your wallet as you will know where to shop for the rest of your studies.

One tip that you should keep in mind when grocery shopping is to always make a list in advance and stick to it, in order to prevent yourself from splurging on unnecessary things. Another great advice that I wish I had given before going to the stores trying to find a great, nice looking laptop that’s probably way too expensive, is using the library of the university instead. UK’s universities provide students with great materials to work with and one of them is the library’s computers. That also applies to other academic resources such as books, which can be pricey to buy for just one academic year and then probably never use them again.

Now, when it comes to clothing, a useful tip is to look around the town you are studying, do a little research, and find some great thrift stores, that even though they are not highly popular, they hide treasures of clothes in great deals and quality. Last but not least, it goes a long way finding a side hustle, like a part time job, to have on the side for some extra pocket money. There are many opportunities for students provided by the university or by nearby companies that are not hard to find, and it can also be an easy way to socialise, as meeting new people is a huge part of the university experience.

Trying some of these ideas mentioned above will help massively your experience as a student and will make a difference in your lifestyle.
